DANCES OF LIFE
In her new concert format “DANCES OF LIFE,” Hiyoli Togawa brings together different forms of expression: gesture, music, and language. It begins with a silent gesture with the viola bow, which slowly turns into dance-like movement. Out of silence, notes, sounds, and ultimately music develop. Life is a dance. Guided by this principle, the versatile program translates emotional worlds—from birth to death—into music. The artists invite the audience to reflect on their own dance of life. In a fast-paced rhythm of music and moderation, popular and entertaining pieces alternate with works from the “great” classical repertoire.
The Rhineland-born musician with Japanese-Australian roots is not only a top-tier viola virtuoso, but was also trained as a competitive dancer from childhood. For this special program, she has invited internationally renowned musicians who are also experienced in dance: star percussionist Alexej Gerassimez, Kristián Palágyi (one of the most versatile accordionists), and jazz bassist Haggai Cohen-Milo. All are stylistically versatile and together can draw upon an impressive spectrum of tonal colors.
“Viola & Percussion – an enthralling combination of sound”
This exciting programme fascinates newcomers to classical music as well as aficionados because of its excellent balance of the popular and the new. Viola, subtle vocal parts, vibraphone, marimba, waterphone, gong and big drum are joined by the voice of Hiyoli Togawa, who fits in her own presentations time and again in order to build bridges between audience and stage.
